Chapter 8

The walk back to Lucy's apartment was tense.

The most difficult part was admitting to herself that Jarred was right. She wasn't gay, but she did love Angie. What does that even make her? She was sure there was a word for it, there a word for every-type of sexual anyone can think of.

She felt so stupid for her feelings, she almost felt like Jarred had been a doctor giving her a tough-to-stomach diagnosis; someone who knows more than she did, telling her something about herself that she doesn't want to believe. Her trust in Jarred meant that he had the authority to do that to her. He knew things. He was an outsider looking in, which meant the patterns and behaviour he sees from the outside aren't hampered by the cloud of complicated feelings and internal biases.

The closer she got to her apartment complex, the more she realised just how right he was. She could look back on her history with her friends and see that almost every argument they'd had, had been about Angie, and some of them have been so petty that to them, it was obvious that more was going on than just defending a friend.

He'd told her that they all knew. She must have, through her actions, made it so obvious what was going on with her emotionally; yet she'd never admitted it to herself.

She suddenly understood Angie's reluctance to come out to her, the stakes and risk about it all felt so urgent and terrifying. Then the guilt washed over her; Angie had confided in her during a time of deep personal vulnerability and Lucy had just up and left.

What the fuck are you doing?

Lucy thought that if she couldn't even be a good friend to Angie, how the hell would she manage to be a good girlfriend? Was the urge to deny the feelings within her so strong that she'd push Angie away?

She quickened her pace, desperate to return to her apartment and throw open the door. She wanted to tell Angie how she felt, and get that happy ending. But to do that, she needed to speak the words, and her stomach was tied in knots.

She had to admit them to herself first.

"I love Angie," she said aloud as she power-walked across the road, her hands began shaking as she said it. "I love her, I want her to love me back."

Her breathing increased and she felt a coldness in her extremities. A light-headedness washed over her - was it the tequila?

She put her key into the lock, and suddenly she couldn't catch her breath, like the air she was taking in was poisoned, she breathed fast and short, desperate to bring more oxygen into her system but it wasn't working. She turned the key and fell into the apartment.

Angie looked up, she hadn't moved from the sofa, her eyes were red, swollen, and there were tissues on the coffee table piled high. The moment Angie saw her, she rushed to her aid.
